Now that I’m older;
in the second half of life,
my ambitions bolder;
children, family and wife.

Different heroes I now claim.
Those I seek to admire.
Their virtues, the same.
Their focus, much higher.

Like knights who did battle,
Fear, temptation and doubt,
for those thought just chattel,
fought day in and day out.

In Arthur’s time they too,
did face many a foe:
dragon, warlock, and shrews;
temptresses from below—

failed crops, Black Death, road thugs—
and some neighbor’s loose wife.
They fought; they could not shrug,
for their few they’d give their life.

The kings’ and knights’ deeds done
were heroic, it’s true.
But just give the common
Medieval man his due.

Their names and deeds not told
in tall or lustrous tale.
But brought to me, my small fold,
a more important scale

Do we give the common men in your lives their due? Do we tell them how much they are appreciated for how they give their lives for us? The world has twisted, devalued, and lost so much of what truly makes a hero!

Men, that goes for women too!

This Valentines Day, let’s tell them all – not just that you love them, but how we value and appreciate them as well.
